Burglars are usually a little more active over the holidays, and now they are finding a new way to break into some homes. Even if the doors are locked and the alarm is set, there's an entrance many people don't even know about.
One local woman says she returned home from a holiday trip to find nearly everything in her condo gone. When she called police, Metro says her home was broken into from the inside.
A busted door shaft and rusted nails show that someone knew how to get into her home through the crawl space above her bedroom closet. For her safety, we are protecting her identity.
"I felt really safe in that apartment and it never dawned on me that someone would be coming through the attic," she said.
Police say there are ways for people to protect their homes from this type of break-in.

I understand your concerns. It is not uncommon for your everyday thief to find
new ways to break into your home. I learned the hard way that thieves sometimes
look for unsuspecting homes during the day and not at night. The reason, which
makes sense, is because people are normally at work during the day time and sleeping
at home during the night. Therefore the chances of having a clean get away is
higher. So this should give families even more of a reason make sure their homes
are secure during the day.
Security shutters and electric blinds can add a lot of piece of mind at home. Some of these shutter and blind options are programmable which allows them to be opened and closed at predetermined times of day - so you're home can be protected even when you're not around. They also have the added benefit of insulating your home.

I agree that installing motion detectors in your home can help deter burglars from breaking into your home. Putting up security cameras can also make you feel more confident about leaving your house unattended.
